Hi everyone,
My Windows Media Player does fine with CD's, and it has no problem playing files from a thumb drive, but when I tried to play files that I recently downloaded from a website, this error message came up: A problem caused Windows Media Player to stop working correctly. Close the program and Windows will notify you if a solution is found. So I close the program, and I never receive notification of a solution. As far as I know, the website I was using is trustworthy. Is there any other reason this might be happening?
Thanks,
Becky
You haven't mentioned the details of which operating system you're using and which version of windows media player that was? As per me, for audio files, I mostly make winamp as my default player and as per the videos, I prefer VLC media player which is quiet accessible too. Also VLC is a freeware.
Raaj.
Also, what file type are you trying to play?
I've gotten this error myself with other programs. It happens when something is currupted. What file type are you trying to play? Also what website are you using for your downloads?
I use Media player as my default, and enjoy it, but all the questions ask will need to be answered to learn how to fix your issue?
If you were using Windows 7 you can repair it, but then it depend on what kind of files you're trying to play, and where they come from and many things as posted.
Yes,
You could try repairing the media player, but it would be helpful, as others mentioned, to know which operating system and what type of files you were trying to play.
Nathan.
So, I thought I had this problem figured out, but apparently I was wrong. To answer the questions above, I'm running Windows XP and Windows Media Player 12.0.a bunch of other numbers that I can't remember. lol. I checked for updates, and apparently I'm running the most recent version. The files I'm trying to play are mp3 and mpg. Twice, I thought I had a solution. First, I thought that saving the files to a thumb drive and playing them from there rather than directly from my computer would fix the issue. That worked sometimes, but not always. Then I thought, Well, my IE crashes quite a bit for some reason; maybe its crashing during a download corrupts the file somehow. So, I'll keep an eye on each download, and if IE crashes, I'll just start over. I thought that was the solution, until tonight when I clicked on a link to an audiofile that didn't require a download and my media player gave me the same stupid error message. So now I'm stumped again, and so very, very tired of this. lol

IE8 crashes? have you tried turning off all the toolbars? or dont you have any installed.
Here is what I'd do, because I can't put my hand on your computer to see.
Redownload Windows Media Player. You can find this on Microsofts website. If you do a search, say Windows Media Player for XP.
Yes, there is a way to do this in the player, but I'm just writing off the cuff, so easier to just reinstall it.
Now, when you do this, you will lose your library in your player. You will not lose thee files, but the library, so you'll need to put it back or allow it to do so on its own.
This way, you fix anything that is wrong with it.
Last, when installing it, simply take the default settings. If you understand how to change these, you can later, but for the fix, just let it go as it likes.
If you need the website info, say, and I'll post it.
